Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Women empowerment is a key objective for achieving gender equality and sustainable development. In Giwa Local Government Area (LGA) of Kaduna State, women face significant barriers to education, employment, and political participation due to traditional norms, limited access to resources, and gender inequality. However, digital media has emerged as a powerful tool for advancing women's empowerment, as it allows women to access educational content, connect with mentors, participate in online forums, and learn about opportunities for economic advancement. Platforms such as Facebook, WhatsApp, and YouTube have enabled women to engage in discussions, share experiences, and advocate for gender equality. Digital media can also facilitate the delivery of empowerment programs, such as skills training, financial literacy courses, and health education, to women in rural and underserved areas. Studies by Olabode and Abubakar (2024) show that digital media has the potential to break down barriers to women’s empowerment by providing access to information and creating platforms for women’s voices. This study aims to examine how digital media has been used in Giwa LGA to advance women’s empowerment and improve their social and economic status.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the progress made in promoting women’s rights and gender equality in Nigeria, women in Giwa LGA still face significant challenges in accessing empowerment programs and resources. Traditional forms of empowerment programs often fail to reach women in rural areas, where access to information is limited. Digital media offers an opportunity to reach a wider audience, but its use in advancing women’s empowerment in Giwa LGA has not been fully explored. This study aims to investigate how digital media is used to promote women’s empowerment in Giwa and assess its effectiveness in improving the lives of women in the community.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on the role of digital media in advancing women’s empowerment in Giwa Local Government Area, Kaduna State. It does not extend to other regions or examine other forms of empowerment programs outside digital media.
